Once familiarized with this laptop, it really flies,
I was in the market for a good all rounder on a sub £950 budget that isn’t screaming “look at me” when out and about yet delivers on performance.
I really did not want to go bigger than 15.6 inch- and this is my size/weight limit for portability when working.
I’ve spent over a month with one of these and it pretty much handles most anything you throw at it with ease or all at once if you want to!
The majority of this month has been spent removing most of Toshiba’s bloatware, and moving my files across to it as and when I found it working without issue
I like being able switch the touch pad on or off quickly with clear light indicatior.
There’s a remote included, this is designed for windows media centre,it does change tracks on itunes and also volume if you prefer that program.
USB3 is blisteringly fast to a usb3 external drive, so very convenient quick backups are possible. I do wish there were two Usb 3 ports!
The preloaded software is fine if you like that kind of thing, I like to make a laptop feel my own and tosh’s face recognition is slowed by the 5400 RPM drive still busy booting windows 7 up-so not for me.
The most useful preloaded software for me was a basic toshiba program that shows if everything is at the right temperatures and the fan speed in percentage with battery health and hard disc status including a visual of what angle the hard drive cylinders are at and whether the head is parked.
There’s a hard drive vibration sensor or accelerometer on this model (it can be disabled)set at no 3/3 it is very sensitive to moving the laptop as i’d move any other.
This feature parks the hardrives head in a safe position momentarily.
I think Setting no 1 or 2 is more practical — or it pops the message up that vibration was detected too frequently on my screen.
It can be set at different sensitivities for mains and battery use.
I like the keyboard look, its action, feel and it has good spacing between keys, although it’s not backlit and people in the us are showing this model with a backlit keyboard on youtube-it would have been very nice, especially on black keys as the casing is also very dark.
*Harmon/Kardon* IS JUST THE SPEAKER model/manufacturers – Realtek provide all audio functionality as in a lot of Laptops,it is described as 24-bit-but I cannot detect any difference between 16 bit and 24-bit settings currently.
I shall experiment with these settings through its headphone socket and add something at a later date when fully familiar.
These Harmon Kardon speakers are better than budget laptop speakers for treble and volume, but do not expect much in the way of bass – I use a Fii0 E7/9 DAC combo on this without any problems and it sounds very good at home or on the move the E7 sounds fine via usb.
Recording Audio on the P750-137 using Audacity on this performs superbly and it rivals a desktop machine for speed in committing samples to ram.
Multitasking is what this machine seems to love, and likely why you will love it when you get used to it as I have now.
The Headphone socket on this model sends out a louder audio signal than most laptops and it’s a good clean signal — there are dolby enhancements to the headphone output including a “pseudo surround” for use with a standard pair of stereo cans, but this surround function knocks lots of bass off the stereo output — the dolby enhancement without surround isn’t too intrusive-most people will find cheaper headphones may well sound slightly better using it.
Webcam is 1.3 MP and ok for messengers/skype, for anything more you may consider buying a Microsoft HD life cam which can record at 720p To disk(i believe higher with certain software or as a still)
The internal microphone is VERY good — on monitoring this through headphones I hear a far clearer voice quality than on any laptop i’ve had.
Toshibas Upscaling of DVDs and bluray playback is world class on this system.
I opted for the I7 8GB RAM/750GB hard drive version-was a little peeved when I discovered it had this 5400 RPM Drive because the processor is *VERY* fast for a laptop and deserves a more responsive main Hard drive.
This Hard Drive brings windows experience index to 5.9,whereas memory and cpu score 7.6 and 7.4 respectively on my machine.
Gaming graphics score 6.7 (on wei) though this is not a hard core gamers laptop Imo, it’s ok SET at low, perhaps medium settings on some big games as The GT 540M sometimes reports,in my case, that it has stopped responding and has recovered if pushed hard.
No amount of re-downloading Nvidia drivers fixes this, for me anyway.
This may be down to it having 2GB of DDR 3 video ram and not the faster DDR5 type.
There’s talk it can be changed for the faster DDR5 type online,i’m unsure and don’t currently require…
