Signal Problems With Your iPhone 4? Grab Some Duct Tape

This is getting very tiresome. The debate surrounding the signal problems people are experiencing with their new iPhones rages on, with Consumer Reports being the latest to weigh in with their opinion of Apples new toy.

Consumer Reports is possibly the largest, most trustworthy consumer magazine in the US; when they talk, people listen. So when they released their opinion of the iPhone 4 recently, not a few ears perked up.

They rigorously tested three of the new iPhones in a radio frequency isolation chamber, which is impervious to outside radio signals. The phones were connected to a base-station emulator (a device that simulates carrier cell towers), and no other phones tested alongside the Apple products (including the iPhone 3G S and the Palm Pre) experienced the signal problems of the iPhone 4. The result? Consumer Reports cant recommend the iPhone 4.

The magazine does, however, helpfully recommend that an affordable solution for those with signal problems is to cover the antenna gap with a little duct tape. One cant help but think theyre having a little fun there¦must work though.

As someone who doesnt have an opinion about Apple gadgets either way, I find Jobs and Co.s response to the public debate laughable. First, Apple insisted there was no problem. Then, it was a software issue causing the phone to display two more signal strength bars than it should have. Pardon me but, what?

I suppose you have to give credit to all the Apple fanboys and fangirls who have rallied to Apples defence. Theyre flooding online forums with claims that they havent had a single problem with their iPhone 4, and almost implying that the thousands (hundreds of thousands¦more?) of people who are experiencing problems either dont own an iPhone anyway, or are too ignorant to use it properly…and here I thought mindless arrogance was exclusive to Apple.

Dont get me wrong, I dont think anyone should take Consumer Reports word as gospel, either. But its hard to ignore so many complaints from users, along with a widely-respected consumer magazines test results.

So, Apple enthusiasts, stop mindlessly worshipping a corporate brand, and acknowledge that just because YOU dont have any issues with your high-tech paperweight, someone else just might. Theres no smoke without fire, remember.
