When it comes to plasma TVs, Panasonic is an industry leader, offering the TX-P42V20 as their latest model. Upon first inspection, the most noticeable thing about the TXP42V20 is its appearance. In contrast to many other plasma televisions that have black or bronze cases, the TXP-42V20 features a grey edge that looks like brushed metal with its high gloss polish. As expected, the TXP42V20B has been designed to accommodate almost all modern A/V connections. Included are four HDMI slots, two USB connections, an Ethernet port, D-sub PC port, and an SD slot. The USB ports are designed to support the viewing of video and picture files and the playback of music files through the television. Also, using an USB storage device, HD television shows from Freesat and Freeview can be recorded for later viewing. This feature is quite convenient, although being able to watch the recorded programs only on the TXP42V20 is slightly annoying. The Ethernet port allows the television to be connected to the internet to receive streaming broadcasts, software updates, or bonus content offered through Freesat and Freeview.
For televisions that have been connected to the internet, Panasonic grants access to its Viera Cast service. This feature allows owners of the television to stream movies and programming and to access Skype from the service for a monthly fee.
The Panasonic TX-P42V20 features excellent picture quality. With its 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio, the plasma display offers crisp blacks, which is a feature that is hard to find on many televisions. In addition, the 600 Hz response time produces smooth pictures with minimal ghosting. Panasonic achieves the televisions rapid response time by outfitting it with Intelligent Frame Creation Smooth Film processing. Furthermore, the television has been outfitted with NeoPDP technology from Panasonic. This technology is an advancement on the way the cells of the display are constructed, allowing the television to display bright colours with high fidelity and clarity. One good feature about this television is that the factory preset video options were optimised for the most part, requiring the owner to make almost no adjustments.
Although its picture quality is superb, the quality of the sound on the TXP-42V20 is slightly disappointing. The inadequate quality of the sound is heard most clearly when listening to music alone, often sounding muddy in the bass and harsh in the treble registers. However, if hooked up to a surround sound system or to extra speakers, the audio output is outstanding.
For people that do not want to invest in a 3D capable television, the Panasonic TXP42V20B is an excellent choice. . Overall, the television exudes quality. With its sleek, modern looks, excellent factory preset settings, Ethernet port, minimal ghosting, built in HD turners, and wonderful black levels, the TXP42V20B combines style with substance. Although the sound system leave a little bit to be desired, the Panasonic TX-P42V20 is an excellent choice for those interested in purchasing a 42 inch plasma television.
